Last weekend saw a busy schedule with many larger promotions putting events on both Friday and Saturday. Undoubtedly everyone is talking about the UFC FN 33 main event and rightfully so. Mark Hunt and Antonio 'Bigfoot' Silva pretty much knocked each other into next week, all for our enjoyment. Big props to those guys on a very entertaining fight.
One of the main things I noticed across this weekends events was the high number of First round stoppages, some big knockouts, some slick submissions and some of them were lightning fast. Friday saw ONE FC, Legacy FC and the UFC put on events, Saturday saw World Series of Fighting (WSOF) put on an event in Canada also. I will be doing a run down of each events First round finishes starting off with Fridays events.
There were some impressive displays on this card with the pick of the bunch being Belignons' KO of David Aranda Santacana. Belignon looked very sharp on the feet, especially when he was whipping his kicks in. Paul Cheng also had a stroke of luck when he came from behind to defeat Alain Ngalani, who up until that point had controlled the majority of the fight, just goes to show that One mistake can cost you in this game.
Daniel Jolly Defeats Matt Steward via Knockout, Head Kick, 0:16
Daniel Piheiro Defeats Joe Reyes via TKO, Strikes, 0:45
Chris Pecero Defeats Johnny Rodriguez via TKO, Elbows 1:03
There were some good stoppages on this card. The one that stands out to me is the 16 second head kick KO but unfortunately I'm struggling to find any videos of that, sorry guys ( If anyone can find it please post the link in the comments, thanks). Pecero looked very good elbowing Rodriguez into the fetal position until the ref came in. Also Leonard Garcia won the Legacy FC Featherweight Title beating (at the time unbeaten fighter) Kevin Aguilar with a big Right followed by some ground and pound. Big win for Garcia there.
Parts of this event were just wow moments. From Justin Scoggins and his unorthodox style to Palelei and his Donkey Kong ground and Pound to 'Shogun' absolutely knocking Te Huna from his senses. The pick of the bunch for these First round stoppages has to be 'Shogun' and his brutal left hook demolition of Te Huna. Also, although not a First round stoppage we can't forget about the nights main event where Mark Hunt and 'Bigfoot' Silva went at it for a full Five rounds leaving everything in the cage. Two warriors right there.
WSOF put on it's first event outside of the USA last weekend, with the promotion hosting an event in Canada. The event turned out to be a good one, with a a new champion unveiled in the Featherweight Division with Georgi Karakhanyan defeating Team Alpha Males' Lance Palmer. The real story here though was Nick Newell picking up his 11th victory (10 in the First round) and positioning himself in place for a shot at the winner of the Justin Gaethje v Lewis Gonzalez Lightweight Title fight that takes place on 18th January 2014. Newell can't stop winning and it's about time he got his chance to fight for that title.
