In the main event of Bellator's attempted PPV, Michael Chandler faced off against Eddie Alvarez for the Lightweight title on Spike TV. The two met once before in 2011 when Chandler took the Lightweight championship in a fourth-round submission victory. Alvarez battled Bellator in a contract dispute following his final contractual bout in 2012 before returning to fight for the title Saturday night. Chandler has defended his title twice since his first fight with Alvarez.
The champion took the lead early. Alvarez wanted to stay outside of Chandler's power and his takedowns. He struggled to find his timing from the outside and ate punches from Chandler as well as giving up the takedowns. He start to get his rhythm in the second round, though he still spent much of it defending before landing a big combo after fending off a takedwon from Chandler. Alvarez looked good in round 3. He hit combos and a couple takedowns before defending a takedown and top control from the champion. Chandler took back over in the fourth round with a punch that shook Alvarez. He followed up with ground and pound that drew blood from the contender.
Both fighters went wild in the final round. Chandler came out early and put Alvarez on his back. He threatened from back mount but Alvarez escaped and returned the favor. He took over for a few minutes. He took Chandler down, took back mount and fought repeatedly for the rear naked choke. Multiple times it looked like he may have been able to close out the fight, but couldn't keep control. In the closing seconds, Chandler escaped and ended the final frame on top.
Eddie Alvarez won back the Lightweight title by split decision (48-47 x 2, 47-48) over Michael Chandler
