Bellator 106 results: Daniel Straus outworks Pat Curran to earn unanimous decision

Straus pulled off the upset to take the 145 lbs. title from Curran with a unanimous decision victory.

At Bellator 106 in Long Beach, CA Pat Curran met Daniel Straus in a Featherweight title fight. Straus won the season 6 Featherweight tournament with a unanimous decision over Marlon Sandro. Curran won the 145 lb. title with a notably violent KO over Joe Warren and has defended the belt twice.

Strauss got started first with a quick takedown. He wasn't able to keep Curran on the mat and they returned to their feet. Strauss landed a couple good blows before taking a low blow from the champ. After the restart, Straus took over for the rest of the round. He pressured Curran against the fence in the clinch and scored a couple takedowns.

After Straus failed a takedown early in the second round, the rest was contested entirely on the feet. Curran relied heavily on his boxing and forced Straus back on a couple occassions. Straus mixed it up better and landed numerous kicks to the body trying to slow down the champ.

A lot of clinching against the cage to start the third round of the five-round fight. Straus hit a toss, but Curran used a wizzer to stay up. As Straus returned to his feet, Curran unleashed an illegal knee that stopped the action and cost him a point. Straus hit a takedown immediately following the restart. He finished off the frame in top position, hitting some ground and pound while fending off submission attempts from Curran.

Straus sustained his momentum in the first of the championship rounds. He clinched up early and took a takedown. controlled from back control. He wound up in some trouble when Curran grabbed a guillotine from guard, but managed to escape. Straus ended the round postured up and delivering blows on Curran, who was cut open just above the hairline.

Straus couldn't get the finish, but he showed he was far ahead of the champion in the final round. He hurt Curran with a left ealy and poured it on trying to get the stop. When he knew he couldn't make it happen, he clinched up and got the takedown. Nothing especially devastating, but he landed and never let Curran get an edge.
