UFC 167 results recap: Georges St-Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sp

The headliner from Saturday night is shrouded in controversy, look at what happened and what's next for the top welterweights.

In the main event of UFC 167, Georges St-Pierre (24-2) retained his Welterweight title with a controversial split decision win over Johny Hendricks (15-1). St-Pierre clinched his 12th consecutive title defense with the win and his 19th win inside the Octagon. This was only the second time Hendricks picked up an L in the UFC and came into the fight after beating 4 consecutive top-10 opponents.

This was a hotly contested fight from the opening bell. Both GSP and Hendricks had good shots throughout the first, but it was round two where Hendricks looked like he may be the next champ. He rocked the champ with heavy blows but couldn't finish. St-Pierre came back in the 3rd, but gave up the fourth. It looked like Johny thought he was well ahead in the final round and trying to coast to victory. St-Pierre took that one too and the fight on two of the judges' cards.

What was the high point of the fight?

Johny's big shots in the second round. He had GSP shook and looked like he might take the belt, but St-Pierre recovered and even took over later in the round.

Where do they go from here?

Who knows what's coming next for GSP next. In his post-fight interview he declared intentions to step back from the sport, but UFC president Dana White said they'd figured that all out in a media scrum. If he chooses to return, and no fan should blame him if he doesn't, a rematch against Hendricks is the fight to make.

With GSP's future in limbo, so is Johny's. He deserves another crack at the belt with the performance he put on and the controversy surrounding the decision. But, if GSP chooses to leave the fight game, his next fight is less certain. Robbie Lawler made a good case for contention Saturday night, but there's no telling how the UFC would play their cards without the champ around.

Watch it now, later, or never?

This was a huge fight with a ton of action and a controversial conclusion. If you're an MMA fan, you need to see it.
