Luke Rockhold vs. Costa Philippou set as UFC Fight Night 35 main event

Scott Olmos-US PRESSWIRE

Top 10 middleweights Luke Rockhold and Costa Philippou will square off in the main event of UFC Fight Night 35 in Atlanta, Georgia.

The UFC has quickly found its main event for the January 15th "Fight Night" card in Atlanta, Georgia. As stated by Dana White last night after UFC 167, Luke Rockhold will face Constantinos Philippou in the main event of UFC Fight Night 35 in Atlanta. Both men are coming off of losses but are still ranked in the top 10 of the division.

Rockhold (10-2) was knocked out in his UFC debut by Vitor Belfort's spinning kick to the head (and the ensuing punches). The former Strikeforce middleweight champion was supposed to face Tim Boetsch, but pulled out of his UFC 166 date with a knee injury. He's currently placed at 6th in the UFC's official rankings.

Philippou (12-3, 1 NC), ranked 9th, rode a 5 fight winning streak at 185 lbs towards the top 10, including a 3rd round TKO of Tim Boetsch. The 33-year-old took on Francis Carmont at UFC 165 and was completely manhandled on the ground, unable to cope with Carmont's strength and wrestling on his way to a streak-busting unanimous decision loss.

UFC Fight Night 35 will air live on Fox Sports 1 from the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Other fights announced for this card so far are T.J. Dillashaw/Mike Easton and Cole Miller/Sam Sicilia.
