The opening bout of the UFC 167 main card took place in the flyweight division with Ali Bagautinov taking on Tim Elliott. Elliott used his odd style to stalk Bagautinov around the cage, but he wasn't landing a lot of strikes. Instead, he was eating a lot of big shots. Elliott nearly finished the fight in the second with a guillotine and hit a big slam late, but it wasn't enough as Bagautinov took the unanimous decision. The judges had it 30-27, 29-28, and 29-28 for the Dagestani fighter.
Elliott came forward right away in the first with his hands down and his chin up. Bagautinov scored with the first couple of punches. There was a lot of stalking early but not a lot of striking. Bagautinov scored with a winging right exiting the clinch though. Ali blasted him with a punch and a knee. Bagautinov got a brief takedown, but it was like three seconds. Bagautinov charged forward and landed a few punches late, and a kick. Elliott never landed anything appreciable.
Elliott continued to push the pace in round two but couldn't land much of anything until he locked up a guillotine. Ali looked like he was in trouble but he slammed his way out. Elliott took top position and landed some small shots, but Bagautinov escaped and landed a kick and big right on the feet. After landing a right, Bagautinov briefly ended up on top in a scramble but they got up quick. Elliott closed with a couple of shots.
Elliott got off to a better start in the third with a straight right and a kick, but Ali fired back with his own kick. Both men landed some strikes but neither got a clear advantage over the first half of the round. Elliott opened up with a five-punch combo. Bagautinov scored with a glancing headkick but was unable to get a late takedown. A huge slam by Elliott came right before the final horn.
