Two preliminary card fights on the stacked UFC on Fox 9 card next month are going to undergo some changes after injuries bounced a couple of fighters. TUF winner Kelvin Gastelum and former WEC lightweight champ Jamie Varner both sent out tweets this morning explaining their situations.
So I guess news is out. I tore my PCL and will need about 4-6 weeks recovery. Good news is I won't need surgery. I'm really bummed tho :(— Kelvin Gastelum (@KelvinGastelum) November 12, 2013
I guess the word got out so I thought I'd let everyone know last weds sparring I tore my rotator cuff and will be out a few weeks! Sorry ;(— Jamie Varner (@jamievarner) November 12, 2013
Varner stated in a subsequent tweet that he gets another MRI in 6 weeks.Gastelum was set to face off with Court McGee in the latest battle of TUF winners, while Varner was scheduled to meet Pat Healy. Obviously there is no word on replacements yet, but I'm sure that will be figured out in the next few days.
This is just the latest change to the Sacramento card scheduled for December 14th. The original headliner was supposed to see Anthony Pettis defend his lightweight title against Josh Thomson, but a Pettis injury has bumped that bout to a future card. Instead, a flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez, originally scheduled for the TUF 18 Finale, is now the centerpiece of UFC on Fox 9.
