Anthony Pettis' first UFC title defense has been postponed. UFC president Dana White stated yesterday that Pettis had been battling a knee injury, but that the lightweight title fight with Josh Thomson was still on. As reported on Fox Sports Live this evening, Pettis/Thomson is off UFC on Fox 9, and Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight title against Joseph Benavidez in the new main event:
Johnson has twice defended his belt on Fox, winning against John Dodson and John Moraga. His first fight with Joseph Benavidez was for the inaugural flyweight title, with Johnson taking a split decision. The rematch with Benavidez was slated to headline the TUF 18 Finale on November 30th.
With Johnson/Benavidez 2 moving to Fox, a lightweight bout between Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard will be the new main event for the TUF 18 Finale, and due to the unexpected change, it will remain a 3 round fight instead of a 5 rounder. As for Pettis/Thomson, no new date has been targeted for this match-up.
