Pettis vs. Thomson postponed, Johnson vs. Benavidez now headlines UFC on Fox 9

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Anthony Pettis will not be healthy enough to defend his title at UFC on Fox 9, so the UFC has slotted Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez as the new December 14th main event.

Anthony Pettis' first UFC title defense has been postponed. UFC president Dana White stated yesterday that Pettis had been battling a knee injury, but that the lightweight title fight with Josh Thomson was still on. As reported on Fox Sports Live this evening, Pettis/Thomson is off UFC on Fox 9, and Demetrious Johnson will defend his flyweight title against Joseph Benavidez in the new main event:

Johnson has twice defended his belt on Fox, winning against John Dodson and John Moraga. His first fight with Joseph Benavidez was for the inaugural flyweight title, with Johnson taking a split decision. The rematch with Benavidez was slated to headline the TUF 18 Finale on November 30th.

With Johnson/Benavidez 2 moving to Fox, a lightweight bout between Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard will be the new main event for the TUF 18 Finale, and due to the unexpected change, it will remain a 3 round fight instead of a 5 rounder. As for Pettis/Thomson, no new date has been targeted for this match-up.
