WMMA November Preview: Mizuki Inoue returns in 115lbs Grandprix

November Edition

I am back with the best in WMMA this month. I'm not sure if there's any live streams, but I'll post when I do know

*

Nov. 4 – DEEP JEWELS 2

105lbs Atomweight

#6 Seo Hee Ham vs. #12 Sadae Numata (For Atomweight title)

Both of these girls (woman for Numata, I mean she’s FORTY ONE, according to Sherdog) would be welcome additions to Invicta’s 105 division. In seems Invicta isn’t keen on a Penne/Waterson rematch, so soon. The winner of this fight, could be next for Waterson.

Numata missed weight for her last fight, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens if she misses weight again. It can’t be easy cutting weight as not only a woman, but also a 41 year old woman. This is a very winnable fight for Numata.

.

115lbs Strawweight

#10 Mizuki Inoue vs #11 Emi Fujino (Strawweight Semi-Final #1)

Inoue drew first in the random draw and got Fujino. Fujino is a tough fighter, but she loses to the best, and Inoue is going to be a star. Inoue has already fought girls on Fujino’s level, such as Invicta fighters, Alex Chambers, Bec Hyatt and Ayaka Hamasaki, beating Chambers and Hyatt. She had the best debut for a Japanese fighter in America in a long, long time (Horiguchi made an emphatic debut against Dustin Pague too).

.

115lbs Strawweight

Mika Nagano vs Emi Tomimatsu (Strawweight Semi-Final #2)

Tomimatsu is a legit, legit grappler with a brown belt in jiu jitsu. One huge difference I see between the men and women is that with the women, belts do matter. If a chick is highly ranked, from what I’ve seen, that translate to MMA. While, in MMA I see black belts like Nam Phan, Machida, Anderson Silva, and they aren’t active on their back, preferring to hold on to posture.

Nagano has improved a lot since getting blasted by #9 Atomweight and Invicta fighter, Alex Chambers, and I expect her to win. Tomimatsu is just too small for this weight class. She weighed in at 113, I believe, for her last fight, and is only 5"1. Regardless of how she does in this tournament, I’d like to see her make the move down.

.

105lbs Atomweight

#8 Naho Sugiyama vs. Masako Yoshida

I don’t see Sugiyama being a viable atomweight contender. She got obliterated by Jessica Penne in Invicta and has lost her last two fights in Japan. The once "#1 Atomweight" showed her true skills as a middling Japanese fighter in an era where the atomweight division was basically non-existent. I look forward to her dropping lower and lower in the 105lbs rankings. However, I doubt Yoshida will be the one to do it.

Nov. 23 – MMA Super Heroes 2

125lbs Flyweight

#11 Kalindra Faria vs. Julie Aguiar

This flyweight grandprix final got postponed from its original October date for reasons I’m unaware of. Still, Faria beat a juiced Carina Damm by armbar and would be a welcome addition to Invicta’s thin flyweight roster.

Nov. 23 – SCS 20

115lbs Strawweight

#11 Alida Gray vs. Kati Casimir

Alida Gray is the surprise of WMMA this year. Normally if you're making your pro debut and the fighter your scheduled with backs out for whatever reason, you get no fight. BUT, in a stroke of luck, veteran of the sport, Patricia Vidonic, who just came off a split decision over arguably the #1 strawweight, Jessica Aguilar, and a short noticed 1st round armbar victory. Vidonic comes in and absolutely handles Gray on the ground in round 1, from her back.

Vidonic might just be the best guard player in at 115 today. She employs a high guard and from what I've seen gives fighters trouble (almost getting the split over Aguilar even though she was mostly on her back). She had Gray in armbar/traingle transitions that entire first round and it could have been 10-8. Then, Gray gets taken down and the first armbar she throws up, she gets it. Vidonic likely underestimated her, and thus, Alida Gray was born.

Here's my Alida Gray scouting report:

Although she is 36 years-young, Gray does not show signs of wear and tear due to her relative late start to MMA. She has shown aggressive striking on the feet and on the ground, posturing up to throw ground and pound with visible intent to do damage.. She was able to Judo trip Vidonic, and hit a nice Judo trip reversal in her 2nd pro fight. Although she was not subbed, carelessness in anyone's guard could spell trouble for her in the future. If Gray can continue winning in impressive fashion, she could see a leave from the regional scene very soon

Nov. 30 – Global Warrior Challenge

135lbs Bantamweight

Raquel Pa’aluhi vs. Aline Serio

Always excited to see Pa’aluhi fight. If she can win a few more on the regional scene, Invicta will probably ask her back. All her losses are by submission.

The Ultimate Fighter

The final female match takes place on Wednesday with Sarah Moras vs. Peggy Morgan. I think Moras is the better fighter, but Morgan's size could give her trouble. Also, IIRC Moras faded in her decision lost to Raquel Pennington in Invicta.

The finale takes place Nov. 30th and I'll have a full write up dedicated to just that closer to the date.
