Dana White open to Daniel Cormier facing Alexander Gustafsson in his Light Heavyweight debut

USA TODAY Sports

With Cormier ready to make his debut at 205 lbs., the UFC president says he's open to booking DC against another of Jon Jones' most interesting challengers.

At UFC 166 last weekend, UFC Heavyweight Daniel Cormier put on a dominant performance in his unanimous decision victory over TUF 10 winner Roy Nelson. Through the 15 minute bout, Cormier battered Nelson from pillar to post. Early in the fight, he wore down Big Country with his wrestling and in the clinch, while later he roughed him up on the feet.

On his Tuesday night appearance on Fox Sports Live, UFC president Dana White gave his response to DC's performance (via Fox Sports):

I thought he looked million percent better than the fight he had with Frank Mir," White told FOX Sports. "He out wrestled him, he beat him standing up, he was kicking more than Roy. Roy was just standing there getting lit up. At 205, I don't how he's going to fit in the 205 (division).

White's referencing Cormier declaring his intent to move to the Light Heavyweight division in his post-fight interview. Cormier has been teasing the idea for a long time now, while building up a rivalry with champion Jon Jones. With Jones currently slated to fight Glover Teixeira in spring 2014, DC probably won't be getting an immediate title shot, though.

When asked about the possibility of Cormier facing former contender and Jones toughest fight to date Alexander Gustafsson for his LHW debut, White was open to the idea, saying "Yeah, maybe."

"The Mauler" was on a 6-fight tear prior to challenging Jones for the title at UFC 165. Despite being counted out by most pundits, Gustafsson went the full 5 rounds with Jones in a fight that many thought he won.
