Prior to the Heavyweight championship main event at UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos, more Heavyweights see action. Former #1 contender Gabriel Gonzaga (15-7 MMA; 10-6 UFC) faces the rising Shawn Jordan (15-4 MMA; 3-1 UFC). Neither man is currently ranked in the official UFC Heavyweight rankings. UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos airs live from Houston, Texas this Saturday, October 19 with the PPV main card starting at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT.
If you like two big ol' Heavyweights slugging it out, then this is likely the fight for you. Both men have shown a willingness to go at it in tough battles, and both have KO power. This is one of those fights where you expect some early explosive action. And you hope for it too - because if it gets out of the first round? Things could start to get ugly.
How do these two stack up?
Gonzaga: 34 years old | 6'1" | 76" reach
Jordan: 28 years old | 6'0" | 75" reach
What have these two done recently?
How did these two get here?
Gabriel Gonzaga will forever be remembered by MMA fans for his Cro Cop KO of Cro Cop, which led him to a UFC Heavyweight title shot. The 6 years since have been less memorable, with losses piling up and a temporary dismissal from the UFC. Since his return to the Octagon, he's been a solid 3-1 and, at times, looked like the monster of old. You never can be quite sure what you're going to get from Gonzaga, but he's looked good lately.
Shawn Jordan is a 4-year veteran out of the Greg Jackson team. He put together nice experience in Bellator and Strikeforce before coming to the UFC last year. His 3-1 UFC run includes some very impressive stoppage victories, and with his only UFC loss coming against Kongo, he has definitely established himself as a notable player at Heavyweight. This is another chance for him to make a big impression and continue his rise up the ranks.
Why should you care?
Like I said, big guys throwing bombs. As long as they finish it before they gas, it will be good.
