Rousimar Palhares suspended by Brazilian commission for 120 days

Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

The Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA) has suspended Rousimar Palhares for 120 days for refusing to release an ankle lock on Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 29: Maia vs. Shields even after the referee tried to break the action.

Rousimar Palhares must feel like the whole world is against him. First the UFC denies him the $50,000 Submission of the Night bonus even though his heel hook win over Mike Pierce was the only sub on the UFC Fight Night 29 card. Then the UFC cut him from the promotion. And now the Brazilian athletic commission has suspended him for 120 days. All for refusing to release a heel hook after Pierce tapped and the referee called for a break in the action.

MMA Junkie has the latest:

The Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA), Brazil's regulatory MMA body, today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com that the fighter has been suspended 120 days following his actions at UFC Fight Night 29.

According to CABMMA, Palhares' suspension won't commence until after his routine medical suspension ends (the length of the media suspension wasn't disclosed). Regardless, it's likely to put the 33-year-old fighter on the sidelines for up to half a year.

"The determination of the period of suspension considers, among other things, the athlete's recurrence of unsportsmanlike conduct of the same nature," a CABMMA statement read.

Palhares was suspended 90 days in 2010 following a similar incident against Tomas Drwal.
