So I, like most mma fans out there, realized there was another UFC event this week, yet while I took note of the event I really never cared. Yes, Maia vs. Shields was an orgasmic five round floor contest of nasty transitions with numerous submission attempts, and defenses, but in reality the card was heavy in what would be facebook fights on any PPV card. Ironically, it was the preliminary prelims which offered the most exciting and relevant fights in the mma grand scheme of things. Dillashaw vs. Assuncao was a war, which I had 29-28 Dillashaw, and Chris Cariaso is ranked higher than any other person on the card, excluding the main event, in their respected division. Think about that for a second. The second highest rated fighter fought second on the entire card! (Dillashaw might be ranked 9th as well right now but you get my point.)
After watching some great, and not-so great, mma fights I tune in to the main card. This is going to be so much better than the somewhat relevant fights I just had to sit through. Low and behold then two out of shape light-heavyweights walk into the octagon. I hold my breathe expecting a great back and forth fight, yet we didn't know Medusa was actually hiding behind Yamasazi's goatee. To no avail I watched two slightly overweight, hell I'll just say it: both these guys need to accustom themselves to treadmills! Anderson Silva is Anderson motherfucking Silva for a reason fool! I was nearly curled up from laughter at this attempt to pose as one of the greatest of all time yet I embraced a good nap, however tempting it was to laugh at this sports performance.
I awoke to Matt Hamill vs. Thiago Silva and immediately my brain goes into panic mode. "Am I still dreaming or did I really travel back to 2008?" Thoughts along this nature churn through my head as I watch two fighters who I have zero interest in fight to see who's old man strength can hold out the longest...."Man, I wish I was watching Dillashaw vs. Assuncao's round four and five right now," is all that is going through my head, well along with Abbey Road by the Beatles, cause why not?"
My interests perk as Dong Hyun Kim vs. Erick Silva is upcoming, yet my brain's annoyance at the "main card" fights takes over and I continually get more depressed by each walk-out song. Low and be hold an incredible thing happens when you put two relevant fights in a cage together....an actual fight. Maia vs. Shields takes place moments later and then I am left here to digest what I just spent three hours of my life processing. It hits; why in the hell am I watching washed-out, over-the-hill, below par fights? Oh yeah, it is the UFC.
Here is a tip, stick to relevant fighters not "big name" fighters. If this doesn't make sense I blame marijuana, if it does, well I blame marijuana.
Side Note: I excluded Palharas vs. Pierce just for the sake of Pierce's leg and the UFC's pathetic job of trying to not show Palharas twist the leg after the fighter, and ref signaled to stop. Shame!
