Prospects to Watch this Weekend

Here are some of the better prospects in action this weekend. I'm not perfect, if I've missed a fight that you know of... or someone has pulled out of a fight let me know in the comments section.

EFC Africa - 10 Oct - Johannesburg, South Africa

Jeremy Smith (11-1) vs. Garreth McLellan (9-2)

Age: 28

Height: 5'11

Smith owns a win over Strikeforce veteran Joe Ray, and is the current EFC Africa MW champion. This is a rematch from last March, when Smith submitted McLellan. Jeremy has a boxing background, but has rounded out his MMA skill set very well.

Demarte Pena (7-0) vs. Alain Llunga (5-1)

Age: 24

Height: 5'7

Pena is the EFCA Featherweight Champ, and will look continue his run this week. He has a Muay Thai background, and has some flashy kicks in his arsenal, but also isn't afraid to hit trip takedowns, and work on the ground.

Legacy FC 24 - 11 Oct - Dallas, TX

*There are at least 3 fighters on this card who will likely be fighting in the UFC by the end of 2014.

Chris Feist (8-0) vs. Carlos Diego Ferreira (7-0)

Age: 29 - Age: 28

Height: 6'1 - Height: 5'11

- #7 Lightweight

Don't be surprised if the winner of this fight has a UFC contract by the end of the month. Feist is a former D-1 Wrestler at Portland State, and currently trains with the likes of Johny Hendricks, and recent UFC signee Jared Rosholt at Team Takedown. Ferreira defeated UFC/WEC vet Carlo Prater last time out, and Feist would be another feather in his cap.

Henry Cejudo (4-0) vs. Ryan Hollis (4-1)

Age: 26

Height: 5'4

#1 Bantamweight

Cejudo the 2008 Olympic Gold medalist at 121lbs will look to keep the 2008 US Olympic team's undefeated streak in tack (39-0) (Askren (12-0), Cormier (12-0), Mocco (3-0), Cejudo(4-0), Randi Miller (1-0), Ronda Rousey (7-0)) , as he fights his first opponent with a winning record. Cejudo has all the physical tools, and amateur background to be a future star, but we have to see how he looks now that he is moving up against better competition.

Holly Holm (4-0) vs. Nikki Knudsen (2-1)

Age: 31

Height: 5'8

Holm is a former boxing champion, who retired earlier this year to focus on MMA. This will be her second MMA fight since deciding to focus soley on the sport. Holm had a kickboxing back ground before she became a boxing champion, and is going to look to keep the fight standing. In her last fight, she scored a big headkick KO, and I expect her to try and keep this one standing as well.

Championship Fighting Alliance - 12 Oct - Miami, Florida

Josh Sampo (9-2) vs. Sam Thao (7-1)

Age: 29

Height: 5'4

#3 Flyweight

I'd expect the winner of this fight to get some serious interest from the UFC. Sampo and Thao are both considered among the best FLWs not under contract with the UFC. Sampo has recent wins over UFC vet Antonio Banuelos, and Bellator Vet Alexis Vila. Thao is on a 4 fight winning streak but has only fought once since 2010, a victory last October. A win here would put him right on the UFC's radar.

C3 Fights - 12 Oct - Oklahoma

Tyler East (11-3) vs. Tony Melton (7-3)

Age: 22

Height: 6'6

East has all the physical tools, and talent to be in the UFC right now... but he can't seem to get out of his own way. Tyler just finished up some time in prison for violating his parole. He has had issues with cocaine, and domestic abuse in the past and is probably one bad decision away from going away for a long time. In the cage, East brings a solid wrestling back ground from high school, and uses his long frame to generate good power. Since dropping back to back fights early in his career to Tony Lopez, East has reeled off 9 straight wins. It will be interesting to see if a year in jail, and roughly 18 months off will set East back, or focus him on maximizing his talents.

Review from last week:

Tech-Krep FC - 4 Oct - Krasnodar, Russia

Shamil Abdurahimov (14-2) took a UD victory over Neil Grove (12-7-1). Now we will see if he can keep a more active schedule and make a run at one of the big shows.

Maximum Fighting Championship - 4 Oct - Edmonton, Canada

Anthony Birchak (11-1) picked up a stoppage win over Tito Jones (10-7) with a rear naked choke in the 2nd round.

Jason South (10-1) saw his O go, when Sam Alvey (21-5) finished him off in the 5th round of their fight.

Smealinho Rama (6-1) got put on the wrong end of a highlight reel by Anthony Hamilton (11-2) and a serious headkick. Hamilton is a Jackson-Winklejohn product, and now has a 5 fight winning streak.

Vale Tudo Japan - 5 Oct - Tokyo, Japan

Jessica Aguilar (16-4) defeated Megumi Fujii (26-3), unfortunaltey it was largely due to several nasty eye pokes.

Sherman Cage Rage MMA - 5 Oct - Stroudsburg, PA

Bekzod Abdurakhmonoz (3-0) scored a 1st round TKO over Phillip Parrish (2-1). Bekzod has now reeled off 3 1st round stoppages since making his pro debut in July.
