Rafael Suanes-US PRESSWIRE
Lost in all of the UFC on FOX 6 coverage was the announcement of a new welterweight fight scheduled for May 25th. "Wonderboy" Stephen Thompson aims to rebound from his first pro MMA loss against Amir Sadollah. MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani has the details:
Sources told MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani on Friday that Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson will face Amir Sadollah in a welterweight battle on Sat., May 25. While a venue for the unnamed event has yet to be determined, the UFC traditionally holds Memorial Day weekend cards in Las Vegas.
Thompson (6-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) will have gone a year without fighting by the time he takes on Sadollah. He provided a fantastic head kick KO of Dan Stittgen in his debut, but the hype of "Wonderboy" quickly waned when he lost to MMA Fighting's Luke Thomas Matt Brown by unanimous decision. He was scheduled to fight Besam Yousef at UFC 154 but pulled out with an injury.
Sadollah is a TUF 7 middleweight winner whose pro MMA career has taken place exclusively in the UFC. He's managed two co-main event slots on FUEL TV in his last two outings, narrowly defeating Jorge Lopez in May, and then losing to Dan Hardy in September, dropping his record to 6-4.
There's no venue set for this card, but it's Memorial Day weekend, and history dictates that this will be a Las Vegas-based PPV.
