Featherweight Ricardo Lamas has probably gone underneath the contendership detectors of most in the last year. After giving up a KO loss to Yuri Alcantara at WEC 53, Lamas has quietly built up one of the most impressive run of wins in the division. Saturday night, he capped off that streak with a very impressive win over Erik Koch at UFC On Fox 6. After a slow first round, Lamas came out hard in the second and forced the stoppage with brutal ground and pound.
Having knocked off a scheduled contender in Koch, Lamas knows exactly who he wants to fight next. In a post-fight interview, Lamas said (via MMA Weekly):
There’s a fight happening next weekend, I’m going to be there watching and I’d love to have the winner of that fight in the main event of Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar.
Definitively finishing Koch, who was scheduled to fight the champion, puts a big feather in Lamas's cap. With an unimpressive win in his Featherweight debut by Clay Guida, Lamas certainly has a strong case for the next contender.
Before he gets a chance though, Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo will face off in the main event of UFC 156. The show will take place February 2 during Super Bowl weekend out of the Mandalay Events Center in Las Vegas, NV.
