UFC on Fox 6 results recap: Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson

David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Bloody Elbow recaps last night's UFC on Fox 6 main event between Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson for the UFC flyweight title.

Demetrious Johnson went into last night's main event against John Dodson as the UFC's first ever flyweight champion, and he left Chicago having successfully defended his belt. Mighty Mouse edged out Dodson 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47 for the unanimous decision victory.Johnson improves to 4-1-1 in the UFC and 17-2-1, while Dodson drops to 3-1 in the UFC and 14-5 overall.

It wasn't easy for the champion, as he survived multiple early knockdowns and eventually figured out Dodson's timing and speed as the fight gradually wore on. Johnson broke the close fight open in the 5th round with a dominant display of knees from the clinch and sharp uppercuts.

What was the high point of the fight?

Two high moments -- one for each fighter. Dodson twice knocked down Johnson in the 2nd round with his powerful left hook, the 2nd one in particular had Johnson on all fours and significantly hurt. In the final round, Johnson took control of the fight with a barrage of knees and uppercuts against the cage while clinched up with Dodson.

Where do these two go from here?

Johnson has established himself as the undisputed #1 flyweight on the planet. Now, the division is shallow so it won't take much for anyone to get a title shot. Ian McCall and Joseph Benavidez fight next week, but Johnson is a combined 2-0-1 against them. Options are few, but I see him fighting the winner of McCall/Joe B anyway. Once the likes of John Moraga, Louis Gaudinot, and others are more established in the division expect some fresh matchups.

Dodson acquitted himself well and put Johnson in trouble more than anyone else has at flyweight, and I think he should fight rising prospect John Moraga up next.

Watch it "now", "later", or "never"?

Later. It was a very good fight, had multiple instances of quality action, but it wasn't dramatic or thrill-a-minute.
