UFC on FX 7: Belfort vs. Bisping Staredown (via UFC)
Welcome, returning soldiers and new recruits! Tonight marks the beginning of yet another chapter in the BECW. Unlike The Ultimate Fighter, this actually gets better each season, so congratulations for being a part of the fifth rendition of the fastest growing fantasy sports competition in the universe. This comes at a price though, as do all wars. Every decision you make can be the determining factor in whether you live or die by the sword. Who will persevere through the pressure, and who will be crushed by it?
Tonight's first card may not have the most star power displayed on it, but when it comes to competitiveness it's the polar opposite of Strikeforce's final event. At the moment of me typing this section, the Belfort/Bisping, Rothwell/Gonzaga, and Sarafian/Dollaway fights are all deadlocked at 55%/45% meaning the hot bout isn't even decided yet. This means there should be plenty of scores on both spectrums after it's all wrapped up. The full card and times for each portion are below:
| Main Card (FX) 9 PM EST | |||
| Middleweight | Vitor Belfort | vs. | Michael Bisping |
| Middleweight | Daniel Sarafian | vs. | C.B. Dollaway |
| Heavyweight | Gabriel Gonzaga | vs. | Ben Rothwell |
| Lightweight | Thiago Tavares | vs. | Khabib Nurmagomedov |
| Preliminary Card (Fuel TV + FOX Deportes) 6 PM EST | |||
| Featherweight | Godofredo Castro | vs. | Milton Vieira |
| Middleweight | Ronny Markes | vs. | Andrew Craig |
| Featherweight | Diego Nunes | vs. | Nik Lentz |
| Lightweight | Edson Barboza | vs. | Lucas Martins |
| Bantamweight | Yuri Alcantara | vs. | Pedro Nobre |
| Light Heavyweight | Wagner Prado | vs. | Ildemar Alcantara |
| Preliminary Card (Facebook) 5:35 PM EST | |||
| Lightweight | Francisco Trinaldo | vs. | C.J. Keith |
OK, so nobody really assisted us in trying to come up with division names. I enjoyed JDH's idea in season 3 of honoring memorable figures in combat sports history, but the problem was that nobody could ever remember which division was which. The BEmes of season 4 didn't really help with that either. So I explained the background of each division to my father during lunch earlier and he gave me the names of a few active fighters that will actually be pretty appropriate to help give each division its own character. If you don't like it, deal with it and be more helpful next season.
| Michael Bisping Division |
| We Came To Pick, They Came To Grapple (lanky6) |
| The Bjorn Ultimatum (Our Bovine Public) |
| Leonard Garcia's Picking Accuracy (forkboy) |
| Legion of Lurkers (ScorecardOTN) |
This is pretty straightforward as three of the four captains are UK residents. Also, as with Bisping's pending performance tonight, an impressive showing this season could lead them to a chance at the gold, whereas a failed effort will put them back to square one again and trying to climb the ranks towards BECW prestige.
| Jon Fitch Division |
| Team Alpha Super Awesome Cool Dynamite Wolf Squadron (gxc) |
| The Fukers (POW) |
| I Can't Believe It's Not Horsemeat! (Andy Davis) |
| Dana White's Bail Bonds (RonSwanson) |
This division is pretty lackluster as far as rivalries go, aside from the obvious battle of the cousins. Much like the promo for a Jon Fitch fight, the group is pretty hard to hype up prior to the start of the season. And they will all have chips on their back wanting to be recognized. Who knows, maybe one of them can have a performance like Jon did against Erick Silva to finally get the appreciation they deserve.
| Bones Jones Division |
| Tim Kennedy Thread Survivors (Violent Newt) |
| Bloody Elbe (Paulo Filho's Psychiatrist) |
| Bob Sapp's Bushido Spirit (Josh Hall) |
| Birds of War (Sugel Mendoza) |
Much like Jones, the names in this division need no introduction. Along with the battle of Texas between Josh Hall and Sugel Mendoza, we have the BECW4 Grand Prix finalists in there as well, and this is the early favorite division to crown a team as champions at the end of the playoffs. Only problem is, will they crash into the metaphorical telephone pole as a victim of their own success?
Tonight's Week 1 Match-Ups
(There's going to be some nifty stuff posted in the comments to this to show how each match-up stacks up against each other in regards to how well each captain's draft went, so be sure to check it out!)

Also, quick note: If you're participating in this season, but not yet in the fight camp, let us know about it one way or another, I think everything should be straightened out with that. However, there's still people in the fight camp who shouldn't be there since they're not involved in BECW5, so remember that whatever rankings PG shows after the event are completely unofficial and inaccurate. Use the live spreadsheet and the following recap to see how you performed individually among the other participants.
Here's how MMAPlayground as a whole is picking the fights for tonight's card.
And how our BECW fight camp is choosing the bouts.
