Strikeforce results: Daniel Cormier wants UFC date with Frank Mir, then Jon Jones next, Steven Seagal ready to help

Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier beat up Dion Staring last night at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine and revealed post-fight that he's got a date he wants to face Frank Mir in the UFC and that, hopes to challenge Jon Jones for the UFC LHW belt and may have a secret sensai in Steven Seagal.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier needed just two rounds to defeat Dion Staring last night at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine. Post-fight he wasted no time in announcing his first UFC fight, or at least what he wants it to be:

"I signed my UFC contract. April 20 on Fox, Frank Mir, let's do it. It was supposed to happen, and we were supposed to fight in Oklahoma, so he owes it to me," he told Frank Shamrock in the in-cage post-fight interview then he continued, "I'm going to let Jon defend his belt on April 27, and then I'm going to kick his ass in the fall."

Pretty ambitious plans, but logical. Cormier had been scheduled to face Mir in a Strikeforce event in November, but the former UFC champ had to pull out with an injury. April 20 is the date of UFC on Fox 7 although no fights have yet been officially announced for that event.

Cormier weighed in for the Staring fight at 230 pounds. He is listed as 5'11" but appears to be closer to 5'9". He's obviously had success fighting at Heavyweight, but has no desire to challenge his American Kickboxing Academy teammate Cain Velasquez for the UFC HW title.

So moving down to chase Jones' Light Heavyweight belt is a logical option, although Cormier will have to be judicious in his approach. The former Team USA Olympic wrestler blew out his kidneys cutting weight for the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and was not able to compete. To make the LHW 205lb limit he'll need to slim down gradually via a carefully planned diet regime rather than a brutal weight cut.

One ace-in-the-hole Cormier may have for a UFC title run is Sensei Steven Seagal who expressed an interest in helping (via MMA Mania):

"I'm looking forward to a bunch of the greatest fighters in the world pitting their skills against each other and trying to see who comes out on top.... If I had to choose anybody today [as a "Fighter of the Year"] I'd pick Daniel Cormier because I think he is the best out of that lot. He's the guy and maybe going to be working with him a little bit. We'll see. I think he's kind of the person not everyone knows about, but he's a "sleeper," you know? And that's going to be interesting. I'm not going to say anything more than that. I'll just say he's a friend of mine ... that's all."
