Bloody Elbow 2012 Year-End Awards - Best Submission

Esther Lin, MMA Fighting

Over the next few days, Bloody Elbow is going to ask for your opinion on some of the best things that have happened in the MMA world in 2012. There will be a total of eight different categories you'll be asked to vote on. For simplicity's sake we're going to stick with high-level and relevant MMA stuff in these posts. I'm sure there was a crazy three-toed neck crank in M-1's Kazakh rookie series or something, but we'll just go with stuff that most people have actually seen here. Cool?

It's pretty simple. I'll post 10 options in a category, you vote for what you think was the best. If you think I left something really important off my list, post it in the comments and we can add it to the poll if it's deemed worthy. I can almost guarantee you won't like all my suggestions, but narrowing down these lists to 10 is tough.

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get onto the first poll - the best submission of 2012. There have been some excellent subs all over the MMA landscape over the last 12 months, and getting the list down to 10 is very difficult. But I did, and this is what made the cut.

It's interesting to note how few fights got finished by submission in the last half of 2012 though. I'm not gonna do the math because I'm on vacation and drinking and stuff, but seriously. Take a look. Other than UFC 153, subs were at a premium. Anyway, tangent over.

Here we go, in no particular order:

Charles Oliveira finishes Eric Wisely with a calf slicer, UFC on Fox 2 - A calf slicer! My P4P sickest submission in MMA.

Joe Lauzon triangles Jamie Varner, UFC on Fox 4 - An incredible fight ends with a slick sub from the bottom.

Demian Maia chokes out Rick Story, UFC 153 - The "new" Demian Maia at 170 completely owned Story, and the entire fight was captivating.

Ronda Rousey armbars Miesha Tate, Strikfeorce: Rousey vs. Tate - Tate fought like hell, but she couldn't deny Ronda's thirst for arms.

Vinny Magalhaes armbars Igor Pokrajac, UFC 152 - The former M-1 champ made quite a statement in his return to the UFC, hitting a picture-perfect armbar from the bottom.

Chan Sung Jung D'Arces Dustin Poirier, UFC on Fuel 3 - Featherweights can't main event a card? Really? Nah, they just deliver fights of the year and stuff.

Ivan Menjivar armbars Azamat Gashimov, UFC 154 - Menjivar locked it up from the bottom in less time than it takes to say "oww". Gashimov should be happy that the UFC offers medical insurance.

Nate Diaz guillotines Jim Miller, UFC on Fox 3 - The replay sold it for eternity. Dude, Miller's tongue was stuck between his teeth! Gruesome!

Karl Amoussou heel hooks Bryan Baker, Bellator 72 - Seriously, this is badass. Catch a kick. Mangle a leg, Stand around and admire your achievement. Hell yeah. Here, see for yourself.

Phil Davis hits an anaconda choke on Wagner Prado, UFC 153 - Gator rolls! Sick choke! How do you leave that off?
