Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy fighters paid despite event cancellation

Greg Bartram-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Fighters booked for the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy show have been paid by the promotion despite the event's cancellation following Gilbert Melendez's withdrawal from the fight.

One of the key questions for many following the cancellation of the Strikeforce: Melendez vs. Healy event was that of what would happen to the fighters who put in a full training camp expecting to get paid to compete. The event was scrapped when an injury forced Gilbert Melendez out of the main event, leaving the card without a main event strong enough for Showtime to broadcast. Without Showtime, there was no show.

MMA Junkie is now reporting that the promotion will be paying all fighters on the card at least something for their troubles:

Jorge Gurgel, Pat Healy, Adriano Martins, Jorge Santiago, Josh Thomson and Yuri Villefort were among those confirmed to have been promised at least partial pay, and additional sources confirmed the promotion is planning to compensate all 19 athletes who were left without a fight.

The exact amount issued to each fighter was not disclosed, but sources spoke to said many fighters received their contracted "show" money.

This is different from the fighters whose bouts were scrapped from UFC 151 after Jon Jones didn't accept a late notice replacement fight with Chael Sonnen for one simple reason.

There just aren't as many Strikeforce cards.

Those UFC 151 fighters could be bumped around to any number of upcoming UFC cards while there isn't really another opportunity to get on a Strikeforce show until November. And, even then, many of those spots are going to be taken up by other bouts that need to go to other fighters. With only so many slots to go around, having a Strikeforce event cancelled meant something needed to be done for those fighters.

Still, it's a classy move from Zuffa who had no actual legal obligation to pay the fighters.
