Rounding out the Facebook portion of UFC 152, Welterweights Seth Baczynski and Simeon Thoresen faced off in the Octagon. Throughout the 4 minute affair both men threw their grappling training out the window as each tried to get the upper hand on the feet. Thoresen drew first blood when a straight right hand opened a cut on Seth's lip. However Baczynski had the last laugh when he knocked out Thoresen with a counter left hook at 4:10 of the first round.
This knock out gave Seth his fourth consecutive win as a UFC fighter. He's in 4-1 in the UFC (18-8 Overall) with his only blemish a decision loss to Brad Tavares. Simeon Thoresen had a lot of momentum heading into Saturday's fight with a 3-fight win streak and a successful UFC debut against Besam Yousef behind him. Thoresen is now 1-1 as a UFC fighter (17-3 Overall).
What was the high point of the fight?
Definitely, the lead left hook counter. While Simeon was consistently landing on Seth throughout the fight, Baczynski was always trying to time that hook. Finally, with a minute left in the first round, it landed hard.
Where do they go from here?
With a 4-fight streak and 3 finishes now under his belt, it's time for Seth Baczynski to take a step up in competition. He seems to have hit his stride since dropping to 170 lbs. after losing to Tavares at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale. John Maguire, who's put together back-to-back UFC wins would be a good next fight for both men.
For Simeon Thoresen, it's time to regroup. He's still a fight or two away from the chopping block, since he's coming off a successful debut. He really needs a win in his next fight to resolidify his position on the roster. A good test for him would be Lance Benoist who also finds himself on a skid after UFC 152.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Watch it now. The striking from both fighters was very solid and the finish is complicated by the eye poke from Baczynski just before the KO.
