After every UFC event it is fun to play Joe Silva... so here are my suggestions.
Jon Jones - Dan Henderson / Lyoto Machida winner; Jones's arm injury will probably sideline him long enough for the two men with claims for the LHW title to fight, and not hold up the division. I was hoping to write the piece campaigning for a Daniel Cormier fight, but the injury will probably get in the way of that for the near term.
Vitor Belfort - He has two options, if he goes back to Middleweight then finishing his business with Wanderlei Silva makes sense... if he stays at Light-Heavyweight then Chael Sonnen is the fight to make.
Demetrious Johnson - Jussier Da Silva / John Dodson winner
Joe Benavidez - Ian McCall - Both have had very close fights with Johnson, the winner would get back into the mix.
Michael Bisping - Weidman / Boetsch winner, but only if Anderson Silva vs. GSP happens. Bisping is the best fighter to have never received a title shot, and has a much bigger name than Chris Weidman, I expect him to jump Weidman in line for a title shot if the Silva/GSP fight falls thru.
Brian Stann - Costa Philippou / Nick Ring Winner. There is no shame getting taken down by Phil Davis, and Chael Sonnen, but no evolution in his takedown defense against Michael Bisping shows Stann's fatal flaw that will keep him from the top.
Matt Hamill - Hopefully he just retires again... but if he fights, a fading contemporary like Brandon Vera could be in line.
Roger Hollett - I'm not sure if it was the short notice, contract mess, or Octagon Jitters, but he looked terrible... a fight with Joey Beltran could be an option.
Cub Swanson - Chad Mendes. Both Swanson and Mendes have Jose Aldo Knee to the head demons to exercise, and with a growing list of contenders, a fight between these two would show who is really going to hang around in the mix at Featherweight.
Charles Oliveira - This one is tough, because it looks like he will be out for awhile after the brutal KO.
Prelims -
TJ Grant - Matt Wiman / Paul Sass winner - All these guys are close to breaking into the mix, and the winner would earn a fight against a true contender.
Evan Dunham - Jamie Varner - Both guys are coming off losing performances in FOTN, if not FOTY candidates.
Vinny Magalhaes - Ryan Jimmo - Both guys were champs outside of UFC, and looked good in their most recent UFC fights.
Igor Pokrajac - Vladimir Matyushenko - why not?
Sean Pierson - John Hathaway / John Maguire winner - These guys are all grouped just outside the top 25, and the winner could sneak into the top 25, and into bigger fights.
Lance Benoist - Simeon Thoresen
Marcus Brimage - Max Holloway - Two prospects who are on a good roll right now, let's see who is ready for the next step.
Jim Hettes - Cody McKenzie - I really think that Hettes started to believe his own hype. He showed a good chin, but looked sloppy and lacking urgency at times. I tweeted after the first round, that win or lose Hettes wasn't the prospect I thought he was before. It will be interesting to see how he responds.
Seth Baczynski - James Head - 4 straight wins, with 3 stoppages. Head is a step up in competition, but not so much name value. It would be a great fight.
Simeon Thoresen - Lance Benoist or Kenny Robertson
Walel Watson - Cut - 3 straight losses, and two very decisively.
Charlie Brenneman - Cut - Lost 3 of 4 by 1st round stoppage... has 4 wins, but no stoppages even though 3 of those wins are over guys no longer on the UFC roster. I've been a Brenneman fan, and he can still win fights in the UFC, but he isn't an exciting fighter unless he is getting finished, and just can't hang with the big dogs of a deep WW division.
