Strikeforce fighter Tim Kennedy is coming off a losing effort in his second attempt at gaining the Middleweight championship. Kennedy got his latest title shot after beating Robbie Lawlor by Unanimous Decision in July 2011. In his post fight speech, Kenny campaigned for a rematch against then-champ "Jacare" Souza, but before that could happen current champion Luke Rockhold won the belt then defended against UFC veteran Keith Jardine. After losing a clear decision to Rockhold in July, Tim Kennedy is ready to get back in the win column.
Yesterday, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker announced his next match via Twitter:
Just added to the Nov. 3 card in Okla. City: an exciting middleweight bout between @timkennedymma & Trevor Smith
— Scott Coker (@cokersf) September 20, 2012
Trevor Smith is a former Light Heavyweight who's gained 9 of his 10 career victories via submission finish. Following a TKO loss to Gian Villante at Strikeforce: Rockhold vs. Jardine in January, Smith decided it was time to cut weight. He made a successful 185 lb. debut at a regional promotion in June and is ready to return to Strikeforce.
They'll meet in the hexagon at Strikeforce's November 3 event in Oklahoma City, OK. Heavyweight Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier was set to face former UFC champion Frank Mir, but Mir pulled out of the fight due to injury. No new opponent has yet been announced.
