UFC Middleweight contender Chael Sonnen was offered, and accepted, a shot at Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones for UFC 151 on September 2. That event was infamously cancelled when Jones declined the fight. Sonnen was then out of luck as Jones' return at UFC 152 on September 22 was offered to Vitor Belfort.
That's not stopping our Chael though. UFC president Dana White tells USA Today that Chael's been training as if the fight was his in anticipation of the injury-prone Belfort pulling out of the bout:
"Chael Sonnen is in full training camp right now,. He's been training since he got offered the Jones fight. He said, 'I'm in full camp right now because Vitor will get hurt and pull out, and it will be Jones vs. Sonnen, anyway."
White also said that although the promotion was ready at one point to book Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva to fight in Brazil that he is no longer considering the possibility after their scheduled Brazilian bout at UFC 147 was moved to Las Vegas at UFC 148:
"I don't want to bring him back to Brazil," White said. "I just don't. At the time we were going to do that, the Anderson fight, we could have really prepared for it and got ready for it and everything else.
"I just wouldn't bring him back down there. It just doesn't make sense. There's no need for it."
Probably a wise call on White's part given Sonnen's taste for crass comments maligning the entire country of Brazil.
