Chassé-ing the truth. HA! Get it? Sorry.

The title has nothing to do with anything except that it is about the chassé bas/oblique kick and I like bad puns.

I was thinking about the chassé bas today mostly because of my left thigh and how much it aches. I've been out of formal training for a year or so due to combination of financial woes, lack of motivation, busy-ness with grad school, and not having valued some incredible generosity from a local gym owner in the past due to said laziness, leaving me feeling way too embarrassed and guilty to go back. However, I feel like in the past 2 months I'm finally getting my motivation and enthusiasm back, and I've been able to find a group of sparring partners from a pretty diverse group of style backgrounds to spar with once a week.

This past Wednesday one of the guys I spar with, who has an eclectic background in muay thai, shaolin kung fu, shotokan, etc., and who is also taller than me, gave me a ton of problems with the oblique kick. Specifically, in addition to throwing it as a single strike, he'd bait me with a jab, getting me to move my head, plant my legs a little, and dip lower in my stance to avoid the punch. This gave him a perfect target to stab his heel into my lead leg thigh just above the knee with the chassé bas, and he used the same combo about 4 times, I couldn't seem to adapt to it. It didn't really hurt much, or feel very dangerous since I had my knee bent, but it was a little demoralizing to be hit again and again, and seemed to add cumulatively to outside leg kicks on the same leg.

2 days later, I'm definitely feeling those kicks. I'm thinking the jab-oblique kick combo, as well as the jab-side kick to leg combo are two cool things I'm looking to add to my game, since I've been trying to add more leg attacks to my game. Being a short guy, it's hard to get a good angle for the kick downward on the thigh, and my reach makes it hard to use as a single strike, but on the other hand I don't have to change levels much at all to get good power on a taller person's leg. I'm also having a ton of fun with Lyoto Machida's outside calf kick to reverse punch, even on much taller people.



So anyway, the whole point of this post is to share my thoughts on these shiny fun kicks and combos I'm experimenting with (and being experimented on with), and open up to the community, what's your experience with the chassé bas, the side kick to the knee/thigh, the calf kick, and other unorthodox leg strikes? I'm hoping we can start a casual, fun discussion sharing ideas on how to add this stuff to our collective games, given that they're unusual (and therefore fun), hard to defend against, and fairly safe in terms of danger of counterattack.

How often do you guys use the oblique/sidekick/calf kick/etc? What's your target on the leg? How do you set it up, or use it to set up other strikes? And how do you defend against the same techniques being used against you? Obviously it's not nice to stomp a training partner's straightened leg to hyperextend it, so it probably goes without saying that we're not doing that.
