Vitor Belfort is in a position no one would have expected last month - he'll be fighting for the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 152 in Toronto, taking on the seemingly invincible Jon Jones. Belfort was a guest on UFC Tonight and shared his thoughts on a wide variety of topics, but the stuff regarding Chael Sonnen was the most interesting. Sonnen famously stepped up to face Jones at UFC 151 when Dan Henderson got hurt, but Jones turned down the fight on short notice and was bumped to UFC 152 instead. Belfort apparently believes that Sonnen never deserved that opportunity, and took a shot at him in a roundabout way:
"We have the youngest fighter and one of the oldest guys and it is the old lion and the new lion. I have history in the UFC. Not like all the other clowns talking on twitter. You know which clown I'm talking about. I think he doesn't deserve a shot at all but I think the event should continue with another fighter. I don't know what happened, but I am thankful that the fight came to me. I am really thankful to Lorenzo and Dana for giving me the chance and to the fans."
Chael is trying to move up in weight and give up on his weight class, that's the way I see it.
Vitor is right, he does have history in the UFC. It's mostly ancient history, but hey, who's counting. Will we eventually see Sonnen vs. Belfort, assuming Jones does terrible things to Belfort in Toronto? I think it's a matchup the fans would like to see, but in what weight class?
