BECW4 DRAFT STARTING AT 7PM EST - OPEN THREAD

D67gi_medium

Greetings, citizens! I'm sure you are at the edge of your couches just dying to know which of our crazy/alcoholic/foreign captains you'll be representing in this season's Civil War. As soon as the clock hits 7 eastern time, you'll be able to follow along with the draft by following this link to a Google Doc spreadsheet that will break down picks numerically, alphabetically, by team, and whatever other method our human database Spam has thought to include.

Captains will have their own Google Doc complete with fancy drop-down menus, and we'll use the built-in chat box for any immediate concerns with the draft process. This should help streamline the process, rather than last season where this comment section was a clusterfuck. In other words, you people are free to go crazy in here (Not like BV's open thread crazy though), you won't be slowing us down any. If you're a captain reading this, wondering where the hell this Google Doc is, it will be in your email once Spam completes it.

Please note that team sizes will be one man short compared to last season (10 per team this time around), and give a hearty hello to our new players who are brave enough to step up and join us for this season's shenanigans:

Andy Anderson
Ben Bauman
DarthRevan
Brad Ackerson (grits207)
Jeremy Couturier

Not everyone may know how exactly this whole BECW works, so I'll try and do a quick rundown. There are 3 divisions with 4 teams each. There are 10 events per "season" on MMAPlayground. For our Civil War, we use the first 7 for a regular season, and the last 3 for the playoffs. Each division will play a round robin twice, meaning the first 6 events are spent in head-to-head match-ups playing each of your division rivals twice. For week 7, see below. For each match-up, we will drop the lowest score of each player on a team, leaving 9 scores, and whichever team scores more points for that event will get a W on their record, the loser obviously getting an L. After 7 events, the 2 top teams from each division qualify for the playoffs. This is based on W/L record, and then total season points as a tiebreaker. The six remaining teams have a shot to still make the playoffs as one of two possible wildcards. These will be based on total season points, sort of as a failsafe in case a good team just plays more difficult competition throughout the season. So, 8 teams make the playoff aka BECW Grand Prix, and are seeded similar to the NBA where the #1 seed plays #8, #2 plays #7, and so on. The 4 teams that didn't make the playoffs will play in a round robin during this time, also known as the Bland Prix.

There are a couple of changes for this season compared to last season, but nothing major. Last season, for week 7, the #1 and #2 teams in a division played each other, as well as #3 playing #4. After talk with all the captains we decided to do #1 vs. #4 and #2 vs. #3 instead. Top teams won't be punished with a more difficult match-up this way, and it should make week 7 exciting for the middle teams fighting for a playoff spot. Also, regarding replacement players, no matter the circumstance, each team will get the option in the regular season to replace one player from their roster that can no longer make picks. That player has to take a zero for at least one event though. So if somebody no-shows an event, you can replace them afterwards, but even if they make it known before the event they can't participate, you still have to wait until it's over to replace them. Once playoffs come, your roster is set, and just like last season, all players' scores will count in the playoffs again, no scores will be dropped off.

Finally, I'll leave you guys with my mock draft for the first round, go ahead and leave your own in the comments if you want. I'm sure mine will be much different than many of you, but I'll try to give a short explanation of my reasoning.

  1. swiftman - I know what you're thinking, I'm really going on a limb with this one. Normally I'd shy away from someone with only one season's performance for a number one pick, we all know how inconsistent MMA picking can be. But he was the only player to be above average for every event last season, and consistency is the number one key to a winning team. Also, he placed first. We've seen what happened to crazybones in a similar situation though...
  2. Sun Yue - Tied for #10 last season, #9 on the all-time points list, so not only has he proven to be consistent, he's done so over the course of all 3 BECW seasons. Plus he once sat next to Kobe, I hear.
  3. DetroitDrew - A well-traveled veteran with over 500 fights picked in his career, Drew's experience and all-around good game is a great centerpiece to any team, as long as he can get one of his famous hot bout streaks started.
  4. ScorecardOTN - Sort of rolling the dice with this one, as he hasn't proven himself on the big stage, but he's ambitious, and put in good numbers that would have earned him a top 10 finish last season.
  5. John Danaher's Hair - He had a bad season last time around, so I won't be surprised if he's not picked up for quite a while, but despite the bad run, he still boasts one of the best average scores in his 30 BECW events and I think is due for another top 10 finish.
  6. magaca - Second place last season, continued to put up great numbers throughout the Bland Prix despite half his team throwing in the towel and not making their picks. I like the resilience.
  7. hardy's in your face - The last couple events of season 3 really put a hurting on his season total, but still with one of the best averages out there and with the full 30 BECW events to his name, he's a easily solid choice anywhere in the first round.
  8. triangled - Despite having 4-below average events, he still managed to finish 3rd in the camp, and top scorer for Wario's Stand-Up Guys. All of this as a last round pick. But will he get complacent? Or can he work on his consistency and become one of the best the BECW has seen?
  9. afrotikiman - Either I'm terrible at coming up with a mock draft order spontaneously, or afrotikiman is actually a solid first round pick. I'm hoping it's the former, but the guy has the experience, and the high placing on the all-time leaderboard, as well as a respectable average score. He did trail off in the past few events though, let's hope he can put that behind him. And pray that Pat Schilling doesn't fight this season if you pick him.
  10. Tim Burke - Despite his team not getting the memo, Burke came to play last season when he led his first (and probably only) team. He also has a very good average score over the course of 18 events.
  11. clayguidashair - Top 10 finish last season, only 3 events below average that season. The kind of late first-rounder you get when all the stars are taken and you need someone dependable.
  12. Ben Bauman - A BECW rookie, but if we had a scouting report he'd be all over it. A writer for SBNation Fantasy Sports blog Fake Teams, you know he's going to take this seriously.

Alright, I think that just about covers everything. I'll leave you with this creepy picture I found while Google Image searching the word 'draft'.
