Many people were upset with the idea that if Brandon Vera had an impressive victory at Saturday night at UFC on Fox 4 he could have faced Jon Jones (or Dan Henderson) for the title. I think Dana may have even hoped Vera had an impressive finish.
Fox has been hoping to get a title match put on one of their shows. Their next UFC show is in December, possibly giving the winner of Jones-Henderson enough time to rest and face a challenger on that card.
Had Vera won, and done so in more dominating fashion than Machida (which would have been very hard to do) you could possibly have a Jones (assuming he wins since he is a big favorite) and Vera fighting for the title in December.
Dana knows a Vera-Jones fight would not sell very well on pay-per-view, so it would be the perfect fight to "give away" on Fox. Casual fans, as well as the hardcores, would tune in and probably see Jones destroy Vera in destructive fashion, which would expose many new fans to Jones exciting style of fighting, thus potentially increasing his pay per value long term.
So I think Dana was not all that worried if Vera won, since he knew down the road it could increase the value of Jon Jones on pay-per-view.
