Video: Why Don't Fans Care About Bellator

I got a little carried away with the Rant of the Day for today's Your MMA Of the Day video playlist and decided to make it a full blown post, even though it entails frontpaging that awful screen capture.

Looking at the traffic for today's One FC 5 coverage I realized that EVERY event we cover gets more reader interest than all but the very biggest Bellator events. I'm talking One FC, Strikeforce Challengers, Invicta, anything on HDNet AXS TV and that got me thinking about why.

After the jump I'll give you the 4 bullet points that I think boil down Bellator's inability to really click with MMA fans thus far. As always if you enjoy this sort of thing be sure and subscribe to the MMA Nation YouTube channel and you'll get my rants as soon as I upload them to YouTube.

Here are the 4 things I think it boils down to, 2 of which Bellator can change and 2 of which they can't. I elaborate on each factor in the video.

  1. The casino partnerships for live events
Bellator isn't on the hook for, and doesn't heavily promote the live events, meaning Bellator has not developed a strong regional base.

  2. Their cable TV partnerships
The relationship with Spike TV (and in the past Fox Sports, ESPN Desportives, etc) have been Bellator's lifeline, but they also result in Bellator being presented as "programming" rather than as "an event."

  3. The scheduling
It's not just Fridays -- although Fridays suck and I pray Spike TV airs Bellator on Thursdays -- it's also the timing of the events in the early evening on a weekday. International events essentially compete with work for most of our readers, Bellator is competing with happy hour.

  4. The tournament format
I love tournaments but when you adhere to them so rigidly that you don't book a Michael Chandler vs Eddie Alvarez or Ben Askren vs Jay Hieron rematch, something is deeply wrong with your gameplan.
