Bellator 65: Eduardo Dantas celebrates his technical submission win over Zach Makovsky for the Bellator bantamweight championship.
In light of his most recent bout, a devastating knockout loss to Tyson Nam at a Shooto event, Eduardo Dantas has lost a bit of stock. The recently crowned Bellator bantamweight champion has been looked at as one of the most promising bantamweights outside of the UFC, but now, plenty of doubting eyes will be on him for his next bout.
That bout should be with the most recent tournament champion in Bellator's bantamweight division, Marcos Galvao, but after such a devastating loss in a different promotion, we'll just have to see when that fight can actually happen. The main issue would probably be receiving medical clearance, which isn't so easy after receiving a knockout.
Recently, Nova União head coach Andre Pederneiras spoke with TATAME about what will happen with this matchup between the two fighters under his wing:
I don't know what comes next after Dudu (Eduardo) was knocked out. There's the suspension but the fight will happen. One is the tournament champ and the other is the show's champ, so it's gotta happen. They knew it was coming and there's no other way. Most fighters in our team fight in this division, so we let them know it can happen and it will happen now.
Most commissions end up giving pretty large medical suspensions after knockout losses, and while there wasn't any official date for Dantas' first title defense, it will probably have to wait a while.
Dantas' most recent fight in Bellator was his submission victory over Zach Makovsky, which won him the Bellator bantamweight belt. Marcos Galvao just recently won the Bellator bantamweight tournament with a TKO victory over Luis Noguiera. Both are products of the highly regarded Nova União training camp, and will be fighting for the Bellator championship somewhere down the line.
