During a phone interview on SportsCenter earlier today after the news broke about the cancellation UFC 151, Chael Sonnen remind me of why he is easily my favorite sports personalty, period. Sonnen went on to say this...
"This was his opportunity to get me on eight days notice. Eight days notice is going to turn into zero days notice because the final week, all you do is make weight and a media tour. I would have never stepped foot in a gym. I wouldn't have gotten one mile, one round, one jumprope, nothing under my belt before walking into that ring.
And this little brat isn't going to step into the ring on eight days notice; how much notice do you need? Let me ask you a question, and a question for all you listeners right now. Have any of you ever been in a fight where you got eight days notice? NO! That's not real life. Do you think our soldiers over there get eight days notice before somebody throws a bomb their way. You got to be ready RIGHT NOW. That's real life."
I love watching guys like GSP fight where they have a specific game plan and they execute it to perfection. Everything clicks, their opponent is taken out of their comfort zone, etc. However, I have more respect for the fighters that don't train for someone else, they train to better themselves in every aspect of MMA so when the fight comes, it doesn't matter what gameplan their opponent throws at them, they are ready for any situation, any position, period. I love guys that train to become fighters, not guys that train for other guys like Jones does and declines a fight because they didn't study the guy's tape.
The second paragraph during Chael's interview gave me chills when I heard him say it live. I would rather watch two guys battling it out to discover who the better fighter was, not who had watched more tape on the other guy. If Jones said, "Hey man, I am a fighter, it's what I do, I'll fight whoever, whenever. Let's do this Chael," my opinion on Jones would have changed dramatically. But he didn't say that and he never will say those words uttered by so many fighters time and time again. Chael, once again, you truly showed why you say it best.... EVERY DAMN TIME.
