Jon Jones secures a guillotine choke on Lyoto Machida at UFC 140 on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada. Esther Lin, MMA Fighting
Amidst all of the controversy surrounding Jon Jones not fighting Chael Sonnen at UFC 151, Jones is still actually fighting this September. The UFC LHW champion is facing off against Lyoto Machida in a rematch of their December encounter (also in Toronto), which Jones won with a violent standing guillotine choke. The early betting odds are in and Jones is a big favorite in this one.
Note that BestFightOdds aggregates the best possible lines from other betting sites, including Bovada, who listed Jones as an early -500 favorite. Currently, the lowest line for Machida is +300 and SportBet has Jones at -456 but all of these numbers will change over time.
Given how dominant Jones was in his 2nd round against Machida in their first fight, taking him down, dropping him with a punch, and choking him to the point of unconsciousness, it's not surprising at all that Jones is the favorite here by some margin. I'm sure though that the circumstances surrounding the timing of this rematch will be enough for gamblers to put something on Machida, whether for emotional reasons fueled by today's events or general belief that Machida can solve Jon Jones successfully the 2nd time around.
