So I don't know how the press conference was handled today, or how many actual questions were allowed. But here's what I'd like to know:
1. Was Jones told that cancellation was the only option?
Because there's a huge difference between 'How do you feel about Sonnen?' and 'We'd really, really like you to fight Sonnen,' and 'If you don't fight Sonnen we will definitely have to cancel the whole card.' Which one Jones was asked is pretty important in my opinion of him going forward.
2. Were any heavyweights approached?
My immediate thought when I heard Hendo was probably out was that a heavyweight fight would make sense. For me, a guy like Kongo would have been perfect - a threatening gatekeeper who's dangerous in exchanges but not really at range, a great way for Jones to tease his HW graduation and not a disastrous loss if it happens. Though there's no reason to think it's a fight Jones would have taken, it would have been less of a lose/lose for him - so was it ever considered?
3. What does this mean for Jackson fighters going forward?
If I'm a low-tier Jackson guy now, I'm worried. Whatever anyone says, the UFC doesn't matchmake entirely based on talent, and are they going to give opportunities to guys in a camp with a reputation for 'ruining' fighters and fights? I can respect Greg's position and style, but I could see White bearing a grudge.
4. Out of all the people saying that Jones had the right to turn down Sonnen, were any going to the fight?
Because otherwise, now there are 50,000 people who will never be a fan of Jones.
