With yesterday's announcement that former UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar would be dropping to featherweight, the next step is figuring out who Edgar would face in his debut. Edgar requested a fight before the end of 2012, and while the likes of Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas seem like good candidates, there's one man who has already thrown his hat into the ring, and it's ... Cody McKenzie? Yep, the UFC veteran and fairly new featherweight himself took to Twitter to say he should be the one to welcome Frankie Edgar to the division.
I heard frankie edger just moved to 145 ad wants a fight before the end of the year dec 8th seattle lets fight!!!!!— Cody McKenzie (@TheCodyMcKenzie) August 22, 2012

@frankieedgar if your looking for a fight by the end of the year I am in for dec 8th Seattle if you have any say in who your fighting.
While I like Cody's ambition, there is no way the UFC willingly books this fight. It would border on irresponsible and McKenzie would have to be one of the biggest betting line underdogs in the history of the UFC. McKenzie's last fight, his featherweight debut, was a body shot TKO loss to former #1 contender Chad Mendes and it lasted all of 31 seconds. His UFC record stands a mediocre 2-3 and he hasn't shown anything beyond his trademark "McKenzietine".
On a different note, the TUF alumnus and semifinalist does train and fight out of Washington State (in Spokane) so he could certainly make a preliminary card appearance at UFC on FOX 5 in Seattle. He certainly won't be getting another top-level fighter no matter how many times he requests it on Twitter.
