UFC 148: Why Did Chael Sonnen Try A Spinning Backfist (and other thoughts)

-I'm not anything. I'm not a fighter, I've never trained to be a fighter. I joined LA Boxing in my neighborhood to lose weight and fool around on a heavy bag for fun. Even I know that a spinning backfast is a precise move that requires nimble and balanced footwork. It is not just something you throw, and Chael Sonnen certainly isn't someone I would peg as a guy to make that move. I think Sonnen may have freaked out that Silva stopped his second round takedown attempts and maybe panicked a little. I don't know. But throwing a strike like that against someone as aware and elusive as Anderson, it was a major mistake and I can't really show much sympathy for the guy.

-I was watching this with some buddies and they all asked . . . "who's next for Silva? He's beaten everyone!" I shrugged and turned the question around . . . "what's next for Chael Sonnen?" His entire career has centered around the myth that he defeated Anderson Silva save for a miracle. He stomped through Brian Stann but had real problems with Michael Bisping (I had that fight 2-1 for The Count). His career centered around his first fight with SIlva and now he was finished by him. Where does Sonnen go? Everything he did was based on getting back in the cage and finishing the first fight. He's not a young man, does he want to join the senior circuit with the likes of Wanderlei and Franklin? I just don't know where he goes.

-Ortiz vs. Griffin was a rare instance of very competent, fight-based judging that took into account the entire performance. Don't get me wrong, after the fight I thought Tito won because of the times he got Forrest hurt, and because I wanted him to win in his retirement fight. But the actual fight was pretty one-sided, and it was apparent after the UFC showed the punch stat numbers. Griffin frankly lit Tito up for two and a half rounds. But we complain about judging a lot, and in this fight they got it right based on the action in the ring, not the blind-eye.

-Remember when Forrest Griffin gave a shit?

-Chad Mendes = Featherweight Jon Fitch

-So someone already wrote this on the main page, but I had the same thought. Silva has just torn through this entire division . . . why the F not giving him a fight against Cung Le just for shits until the title situation clears up? Make it non-title, and if Cung manages to win then he gets a shot. Kind of like the James Irvin fight. I mean, right now we are looking at someone like Tim Boestch, Michael Bisping, or Hector Lombard getting a shot. Of these money, Boestch might be the most capable, Bisping the best sale, and Lombard the most exciting . . . but I think Rich Franklin can beat all three of those guys at middleweight. I guess Vitor Belfort is the logical next guy if he gets a win against someone. So yeah, until this is figured out lets at least have some fun!

-The rest of the fights where pretty good, I was glad Mike Easton won (DC!) but other than that nothing to really get too excited about. I think Demian Maia could be a monster at welterweight but that fight and its freak ending is no real indication of where he stands. The prelims were okay but didn't mean much. Costa Phillapou is a nice win streak but really, he's fought pretty shitty competition so far.

Fights to make next:

-Anderson Silva vs. Shogun Rua - I think its time to give Anderson a couple more showcase fights at 205 lbs until they figure out who's next at MW. I know this sounds perposterous but recall Rua saying when he won the title specifically that he would fight Silva if asked. Rua is kind of stuck right now in the light heavyweight muddle because he was so thoroughly beaten by Jon Jones. This would be a HUGE fight, especially if they stick it in Brazil. I know it probably won't happen, but both guys are older and this could be a big big payday and fans would go batshit. Can't a man dream?

-Chael Sonnen vs. Rich Franklin - Why not? It would be a good fight Franklin wants to make a serious run at the title so why not give him Chael? I was tempted to pair him with a Bisping again or Vitor, but that's not smart business because those two guys are all that is left in terms of a marketable challenger and I think Sonnen would snuff them out.

-Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar - Lets see someone make Forrest give a shit again.

-Cung Le vs. Chris Leben - Leben's suspension should be up soon, right?

-Patrick Cote vs. CB Dollaway - Jobbers match I guess, Cote seemed game but he still is what he always was.

-Demian Maia vs. Thiago Alves

-Dong Huyn Kim vs. CB Dollaway

-Mike Easton vs. Eddie Wineland

-Ivan Menjivar vs. Scott Jorgensen
