Two more fights were added today to the rapidly filling UFC on Fuel TV 5 card in Nottingham, England on September 29th, and one of them features a highly-touted British middleweight, who has finally signed with the UFC: current BAMMA middleweight champ, Tom Watson, who will face former TUF competitor, Brad Tavares. The UFC announced the booking today, as well as a welterweight bout between fellow Brits, John Maguire and John Hathaway:
It's official: UFC has signed British middleweight standout Tom "Kong" Watson to a promotional contract. Southampton's Watson (15-4) has won 11 of his last 12 bouts, defeating the likes of Murilo "Ninja" Rua, John Maguire, and Matt Horwich in the process. The British MMA champion will make his UFC debut September 29 in Nottingham, England against Brad Tavares.
Also in Nottingham, top British welterweights have verbally agreed to fight as 18-3 submission specialist John Maguire takes on 15-1 John "The Hitman" Hathaway.
A striker known for having KO power in both his hands and feet, Watson is also notable for spending most of his training camps in North America with Greg Jackson's team in New Mexico, as well as with Firas Zahabi in Montreal. Some of "Kong's" more notable wins include KO victories against Murilo Rua and John Maguire (the only stoppage loss of Maguire's career), and a decision over seasoned vet, Matt Horwich. Most recently, Watson handed Jack Marshman the first loss of his career, TKOing him in a successful title defense at BAMMA 9 in March. Tavares, meanwhile, improved his UFC record to 3-1 with a decision win over Dongi Yang in May. This will be Tavares's first fight outside of the U.S.
The welterweight bout should be an interesting one as well, as Maguire has quickly become a fan-favorite with his aggressive "Gypsy Jiu Jitsu" style which he has employed to great success against solid grapplers like Justin Edwards and Damarques Johnson. Hathaway returned after over a year's absence to take a decision win against Pascal Krauss at UFC on Fox 3 in May. This will be Hathaway's first fight in his native England in nearly two years.
