Perhaps in response to complains about the mediocre line-up on their last Rio card, that mostly featured Ultimate Fighter: Brazil cast-members, the UFC has been busy stacking the card for their return to Brazil on October 13th, and the latest addition is an interesting welterweight bout between Rick Story and Demian Maia. Story succinctly tweeted about the match-up this afternoon:
Story, once a promising young welterweight prospect, hit a bit of a rough patch 2011, suffering back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, against Charlie Brenneman and Martin Kampmann. The Washington native was dead-set on avoiding his third loss, which may have resulted in his release from the UFC, when he smartly put aside the brawling style that had won him some fans in the last few years, and went back to his wrestling to grind out a decision against UFC newcomer, Brock Jardine, at UFC on FX 4 last month.
Maia, who finally gets the chance to fight in his native Brazil, decided to cut weight for the first time in his MMA career and moved down to welterweight to face the talented Dong-Hyun Kim earlier this month. Maia got a much-needed win after Kim suffered a muscle spasm and verbally submitted following a Maia takedown, but it was hard to judge the fight as Maia's first true welterweight "performance" as the bout lasted only 47 seconds. Nonetheless, it was encouraging to see the submission ace go back to his roots and immediately pursue the takedown against Kim, as many fans had criticized his willingness to engage opponents on the feet in prior fights, rather than get things to the ground where he holds a significant advantage over much of the UFC roster.
