Lots of extreme with an 'X' news this edition. Anthony Johnson signs on for a bout with Jake Rosholt under the Xtreme Fight League banner on September 21 in Tulsa, OK. Rumble recently signed with Titan FC earlier in the week so these must be one and done headliners as he tries to get back in to the big leagues. It would be hard to fathom that the UFC would sign Johnson back so soon after weight issues forced his bout with Vitor Belfort to be changed to a catchweight fight and he was released, but Strikeforce just lost a hot commodity in King Mo at 205 and desperately needs more bodies in that weight class...ok well most of their weight classes. These next two big fights are huge stepping stones in Johnson's future, but we'll have to see if he's finally found a home in his new weight class.
John Alessio was released by the UFC once again. Alessio lost by unanimous decision to both Mark Bocek and Shane Roller in blanket & pillow matches during his most recent run with the promotion. Alessio campaigned hard to get the roster spot and still has a few good years to test out prospects as a gatekeeper. Once again, Strikeforce could use some new faces from the top 100 but who knows what's really going on over there? Hopefully he does make it over and Pat Healy can get that match he wants to avenge his brother Ryan.
Some intriguing match-ups on the horizon in the flyweight class may result in future UFC signings. Danny Martinez will square off against Federico Lopez at MEZ Sports: Pandemonium 7 on August 18, while Sean Santella takes on Evan Velez at Cage Fury 16 August 24. Both Martinez and Santella are presumably on the UFC's radar as they are highly ranked American flyweights, but if an upset happens one of their lucky opponents may end up taking their spot. Santella will share the spotlight with UFC vet David Branch, who will be headlining against undefeated Tim Williams.
