Frank Mir slides over to Strikeforce for a his first bout outside the UFC since 2001 (historical side note; Mir subbed the notorious Dan Quinn in that fight) to face Daniel Cormier in an October headliner on Showtime. It really isn't the earth-shattering event that many are making it out to be since Cormier will be headed over to UFC after this fight anyway. The crossover doesn't mean as much for any other fighters on the Strikeforce roster, and I'm not even sure it bodes well for the relations between White and Showtime. White merely wanted to call the shots instead of having Tim Sylvia signed and possibly damaging Cormier's momentum before he comes over (not that I'd bet on a Sylvia upset, but it is possible). It's a win-win situation for Strikeforce/Showtime, Zuffa, and the fans.
A bit more surprising is the Strikeforce signing of Adriano Martins, the Jungle Fight lightweight champion who decided to transition slowly up the talent ladder instead of diving into deep water with the UFC...or at least that's his version of the story. Apparently he was in talks with the UFC, but realized how stacked the division is there and wanted to make a bigger splash with the little brother promotion. Good move, he can show off his talents on a big stage and hopefully make the cut if and when the merge happens anyway.
Braulio Estima finally makes his MMA debut and it will be with Titan Fighting Championships, so those of us with AXSTV have a chance to see one of the all-time BJJ greats test his mettle in a cage. Estima will face Chris Holland (who recently defeated Phil Baroni at Ring of Fire 43) on the August 24 card in Kansas City. If I lived near KC, I'd be buying my tickets ASAP.
