Renan Barao defeated Urijah Faber by unanimous decision (49-46, 50-45, 49-46)
Renan Barao did what he had to, and he picked up the UFC interim bantamweight title by taking a unanimous decision over Urijah Faber in the main event of UFC 149. Barao was able to keep Faber on the outside for pretty much the whole fight, frustrating the former WEC champ with solid leg kicks and spinning attacks. Faber only went for one takedown in the whole fight, which failed. It was not a good performance from Faber, but Barao looked pretty good overall.
The fighters took a while to establish their range early. Barao landed an inside leg kick, then threw a spinning back kick. He landed a nice knee inside as well. Faber landed a nice body shot. Not a lot was really happening though.
The two men finally opened up a bit early in the second, but Faber was missing a lot. Barao got poked in the eye. Barao landed a flying knee on the restart. Faber looked to press it against the fence but couldn't get anything going. Barao missed with a head kick. Faber landed an okay right. Both men landed in a good exchange (finally). Barao landed a nice leg kick that had Faber limping a bit.
Faber landed a right to open round three, but Barao responded with a leg kick and two solid punches. Barao kept attacking and Faber was just too far out of range to land effectively. Barao stuffed a Faber shot. Barao landed a nice right and a heavy leg kick. Faber looked to clinch but was just swatted away by Barao.
Faber landed a decent left inside early in the fourth. Neither man had a lot going over the first half of the round though. Barao whiffed on a spinning kick. Barao landed a nice body/head combo. The speed difference was quite apparently.
Faber showed a little more aggression in the final round, but it was a bit too little too late. Faber tried to catch a kick but got pushed off by Barao. Fsaber landed a few jabs here and there. Barao ripped Faber with a nice combo finished by a left hook. Barao landed a big leg kick. Barao kept holding his hand out to keep Faber away, and Faber just held onto it.
