Yesterday, we learned that Andrei Arlovski and Jens Pulver would officially be making their One FC debuts at One FC 5 this August in the Philippines. Today, MMA Weekly reports that two other notable fighters, Bibiano Fernandes and Phil Baroni, have opponents slated for the event.
Fernandes, who after the fall of Dream was a very desirable free agent, is to make his promotional debut against Gustavo Faciroli. After Dream folded, Fernandes was speculated to have a future with the UFC, even making a verbal agreement to fight Roland Delorme at UFC 149. Negotiations eventually fell through, however, as Bibiano decided that One FC was the better choice for him at the time. Fernandes is a top bantamweight, ranked #10 in the SBnation consensus rankings. It will be interesting to see where he ends up after his first contract with One FC.
Phil Baroni is a former UFC and Pride fighter who has fought in many promotions in his 29 fight career. He is currently 14-15, and he isn't getting much better. He was supposed to fight former UFC and Bellator fighter Roger Huerta at a different One FC card, but a TKO loss to Chris Holland before the fight meant that he had to pull out because he couldn't be medically cleared. He is now slated to fight Rodrigo Ribeiro (9-9) at the event this August in the Philippines.
Despite many of these recent signees being less than spectacular of late, One FC is showing that they are willing to get as many name fighters as they can. They aren't going to be challenging the UFC anytime soon, but they seem to be setting themselves up for success.
