The preliminary card of Strikeforce: Rockhold Vs. Kennedy is in the bag, and all of the bouts were pretty entertaining. The judging wasn't exactly awesome though. The two fights that went to split decisions should have been unanimous, and the featured bout of the undercard had some cards that were a little goofy to say the least.
In the top bout on the preliminary card, Pat Healy looked to claim a Strikeforce lightweight title shot against Gilbert Melendez when he faced off with DEEP champ Mizuto Hirota. Hirota surprised everyone with an early takedown, and controlled the first round. The second was extremely close, with both men getting takedowns and the striking being even. Healy controlled the third with his wrestling. I had it 29-28 Hirota, but Healy ended up winning a unanimous decision. It truly was a close fight that could have gone either way, but the 30-27 card for Healy was terrible.
In other bouts, Ryan Couture had all he could handle from Joe Duarte, but took over in the third and seemed destined for a pretty clear 29-28 win. One judge disagreed, but Couture still bumped his win streak to three. Jorge Masvidal almost finished Justin Wilcox early, but couldn't chase him down. Wilcox came on in the second half of the fight, but it was another case where a clear 29-28 ended up being a split.
In the opening bout of the televised card, Jordan Mein picked up a decision victory over Tyler Stinson. Mein got the best of the first round, negating Stinson's reach advantage with some excellent counterstriking. Stinson had a cut opened over his eye that looked pretty bad. Stinson got a takedown in the second but wasn't able to do anything with it. Stinson was game on the feet over the second half of the fight, but was basically just outboxed.
There was also one dark match, which ended up being the only finish on the preliminary card. Jason High caught Nate Moore coming in for a takedown and latched on a guillotine. The bout was over in just 26 seconds.
