A explosive battle between former teammates is set to go down at UFC 150 in Denver, CO as Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone is set to meet Melvin "Young Assassin" Guillard, MMA Junkie reported earlier this afternoon. Cowboy had been clamoring for a fight on this card, as he was born in nearby Colorado Springs. He will get exactly that in the explosive and ultra talented Guillard.
Both men are coming off unanimous decision victories in their last outings, Cerrone winning a decision over Jeremy Stephens at UFC on Fuel 3, and Guillard coming off a recent decision win over Fabricio Camoes at UFC 148.
Cerrone has been a tear as of late, going 7-1 in last 8 fights, with the lone loss coming in one sided fashion at the hands of top LW contender Nate Diaz. Guillard had lost 2 fights in a row before defeating Camoes, both by rear naked choke to Jim Miller and Joe Lauzon, respectively. Prior to the back to back defeats, Guillard had won five straight UFC fights and was viewed as a top contender for the title.
After leaving Greg Jackson's gym in Albuquerque, NM, Guillard has trained exclusively with Imperial Athletics in Florida. Cerrone is still a mainstay with the Jackson camp, so it is likely there will be high amounts of tension by the time the fight gets here.
This fight will be critical for both men, as the loser falls far out of title contention, while the winner will still be on the fringe of contendership. Both fighters have extremely high level striking, meaning the fans will have plenty of reasons to be excited about this booking.
UFC 150 takes place on August 11, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, CO.
