Superheroes and Martial Arts: The Dark Knight Would Style on Anyone

One week out until the best movie of the decade comes out, The Dark Knight Rises MUTHERFUKERS!!! Watching the training sequence in Batman Begins was outstanding, because it showed Bruce Wayne learning the deadly arts which would become his craft in defeating evil-doers. Another DVD I watched recently was Batman: Year One (highly recommend it), which documents his first year fighting crime in Gotham and his bouts with Cat-Woman and other mobsters. Bruce Wayne is not your typical superhero. He wasn’t bitten by a radio active spider. He wasn’t born with the ability to see through walls, or heal quickly, or have beams of energy shoot out of his eyes or hands. He is an orphaned playboy billionaire, that could enjoy a life of luxury without a care in the world…but he never wanted that path. His path is much darker, with a haunted past and unforgiving guilt that most would not want to carry.

It’s safe to say that a large majority know of the legend that is Batman, and I for one am a huge mark for the Caped Crusader. When I first began looking into martial arts, I stumbled upon Hapkido, and my uncle was quick to point out that Bruce Wayne also dabbled in that art. I thought it would be an honor to train in the same light as Batman. My interest in Hapkido vanished quickly, but my interest in how Batman fought never went away. I would watch all of these superheroes rely on their “gifts” that they were born with or somehow acquired through one freak accident or another. Sure it was neat to see the Webslinger bounce around and avoid damage via his Spidey Sense. It was cool to see Wolverine take a beating and keep on coming due to his healing and adamantium skeleton. And as much as I admire their ability to overcome adversity, they still had super-powers to back them up. The Dark Knight doesn’t have that luxury or safety net.

This is a man that as a result of his parents’ death and his inability to forgive himself for not being able to prevent it runs around as a vigilante to stop crime and injustice. Yeah yeah he has some nifty toys to help out, but at the end of the day, when those toys fail, Batman relies on his own wits and fighting ability to get him out of bad situations. He faces adversaries, more times then not a few at the same time, that are larger and much more dangerous. And yet he is the victor in these battles. He is hailed as the best martial artist in the DC comic world, and I would still place money on him fighting any hero or villain in the Marvel world as well. There are some other badasses like Hawkeye, Black Widow, The Punisher, Lady Shiva, etc, but I still feel that the Dark Knight would style on any of these guys. If you guys or gals think I’m wrong, show me your superhero and why you think they could match up against Bruce W. Cheers to The Dark Knight Rises in one week baby!
