News surfaced yesterday from Shogun's camp that Alexander Gustafsson would not be able to fill in the slot against Mauricio Rua at UFC 149 in Calgary on July 21 after Thiago Silva got injured, because allegedly he had broken one his hands and would be out of action until the fall.
When MMANytt.se reached out to UFC to confirm whether this was true, they received this answer.
”I confirm that there is nothing wrong with Alex’s hand,” says UFC's press contact Roberta Casalino
Additionally, when Fighter Magazine got in contact with Alexander himself, he told them this (my translation):
"My hands are healthy, no idea where they got that rumor from." - Alexander Gustafsson
The story originated from Shogun's Facebook page, the full quote is as follows:
The name Rashad Evans has been talked about but he is injured. Same goes for Minotouro. Gustafsson was another option but it seems like he has a broken hand and will only be back in October. For us the only options left at the time are Phil Davis, who is fighting Wagner Caldeirão in August, and Ryan Bader, who is fighting Lyoto in the same event. But I still believe these fights can be rearranged. UFC 149 is pay-per-view and the one on Aug. 4th is open TV in the US.
So there you have it. Obviously it is good news to hear that The Mauler is healthy, it does make you wonder where Shogun's camp had gotten this idea from though. It is unknown at this time whether Gustafsson has been offered the fight or not, or if he's even interested.
