In the modern era of MMA, when you think of the word "fighter", a man of the form of Roy Nelson or Mike Russow is not the type of person who would be first on your mind. The two are mid-tier heavyweights at best, and their girth has drawn scrutiny from many an MMA fan. When two fighters are so similar, it's not too much of a surprise when one calls the other out.
After last night's UFC 147, Roy Nelson did just that. Shortly after the over-matched Mike Russow lost to Fabricio Werdum, Nelson took to twitter to make a challenge, and even raised the stakes:
I want Mike Russow and loser goes to 205 or becomes Dana White Rich. Let make it happen @danawhite
Now, I'm not sure what he means by "Dana White Rich", but the challenge he made is an interesting one. Nelson has already mulled over the idea of dropping to light heavyweight, even saying he'd drop if he added 100,000 likes on facebook.
The prospect of this fight is interesting. If the challenge is accepted, I can see this fight going either way. At the moment, Roy is coming off of a big knockout win over Dave Herman, while Russow just got brutally TKO'd by Fabricio Werdum. While the UFC matchmakers tend to not match people coming off a win with people coming off a loss, they have done so under special circumstances. Does this challenge qualify? We'll just have to wait for what the UFC brass decides.
