Hugo Wolverine defeated John Macapa by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Anyone who watched TUF Brazil was probably pretty hyped about this bout, and it didn't disappoint. Hugo "Wolverine" Viana overcame a big size difference to take a razor-thin split decision victory over John "Macapa" Teixeira in a featherweight bout at UFC 147. The bout featured some cagey striking from both men, but Viana's body work and takedown defense was likely what swayed the judges.
The two fighters threw down early and both had their moments. Viana used a bit of a speed advantage to get out of Macapa's range while landing his own stuff, and some late work against the cage probably earned him the first round. It was close though. The second leaned more towards Macapa, who used his size to get a brief takedown and he was the more accurate fighter on the feet. Viana did some nice work to the body though.
Both fighters slowed down considerably in the third. Macapa got a brief takedown late and was the fighter coming forward for most of the round, but Viana landed some solid shots standing. It was apparently enough to take the decision, but Macapa has nothing to be ashamed of (other than missing weight by four pounds) and could have easily taken the decision himself.
