UFC 147 Fight Card Primer: Preliminary Card

Stay connected for news and updates

Generally we break these things down fight-by-fight, but for this event we're going to do one primer for the whole undercard. There are a few fighters that you might not immediately recognize (ie. all of them), so we'll provide a little background info on each and break down the matchups a bit. There will also be primers covering most of the main card, and a separate one for the main event.

The preliminary card features bouts at middleweight and featherweight. Two of the preliminary card fights will be aired live on Facebook, and the other four will be shown on FX. The Facebook stream will begin at approximately 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT, and the FX broadcast will kick off at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Here's a quick rundown of the all the scheduled fights.

Anistavio "Gasparzinho" Medeiros de Figueiredo (15-7) vs Rodrigo Damm (9-5)

The feature bout of the preliminary card features two guys that really don't like each other all that much. Gasparzinho was the biggest "personality" on TUF Brazil, and he did his best to annoy everyone in the house. He succeeded with Rodrigo Damm in particular. Gasparzinho lost in the quarter-finals of the show by decision to eventual finalist Rony Jason, while Damm made it to the semis before having to bow out with injuries. Damm was once one of the top prospects in MMA, and he'll look to make the best of an annoying situation with a win over Gasparzinho that could help him rebuild his career.

Delson "Pe de Chumbo" Heleno (23-6) vs Francisco "Massaranduba" Drinaldo (10-1)

This bout is kind of weird, because neither man is a middleweight. Heleno has fought at welterweight for most of his career and Massarduba is a lightweight, believe it or not. He did weigh in at 183 pounds though. Both men bowed out in the quarter-finals, with Heleno getting subbed by Sergio Moraes and Drinaldo getting TKO'd by Thiago Bodao. The fight is one of the closer bouts on the card and could be a contender for fight of the night.

John "Macapa" Teixeira (13-0-1) vs Hugo "Wolverine" Viana (5-0)

Macapa lost a war with Rodrigo Damm by split decision in the quarter-finals, doing enough to make sure that Damm couldn't continue in the competition. He also weighed in at 150 pounds, four over the featherweight limit, and was stopped from cutting any more weight. That could be a major concern against the hungry Viana, who lost a solid bout with Rony Jason in the semi-finals. Both men are undefeated and this should be another excellent fight.

Thiago "Bodao" Perpetuo (8-1-1) vs Leonardo "Macarrao" Mafra Teixeira (5-0)

Both men were eliminated from the competition by finalist Cezar Mutante, with Macarrao falling in the quarters and Bodao falling in the semis. Bodao was one of the most popular guys in the house and he got quite an ovation at the weigh-ins yesterday. He's a slight favorite entering the bout.

Marcos "Vina" Vinicius Borges Pancini (19-3-1) vs Wagner "Galeto" Campos (11-3)

Like the last fight, both of these men were eliminated by the same fighter - Godofredo Pepey. Sort of. Vina was actually eliminated twice, the first time by Viana, but was given a second chance in the semis after Rodrigo Damm was forced out with an injury. Vina is one of the biggest favorites on the entire card, which is a bit surprising because most people considered this a coinflip.

Felipe Arantes (14-4) vs Milton Vieira (13-7-1)

In the only battle between non-TUF Brazil contestants on the preliminary card, Arantes meets the master of the anaconda choke. Vieira is a Pride vet who has only fought sporadically since 2009, with his last bout taking place in Strikeforce almost a year ago. Arantes is 1-1 in the UFC thus far, losing to UFC 147 main carder Yuri Alcantara in his debut but rebounding with a decision win over Antonio Carvalho at UFC 142.
