The UFC announced another addition to their September 1st UFC 151 card today, this time in the lightweight division with wrestlers, Danny Castillo and Michael Johnson, set to go at it:
Danny "Last Call" Castillo and TUF 12 finalist Michael Johnson will meet in a lightweight matchup of powerhouse wrestlers with knockout skills.
Castillo, now training with Urijah Faber's Team Alpha Male, has quietly put together a 4-1 record since moving over from the WEC into the UFC's lightweight ranks. Perhaps some of the lack of buzz surrounding Castillo can be attributed to his forgoing the more wild, brawling style he used in the WEC, for a more underwhelming and grinding wrestling attack, which he has been able to implement successfully, but without coming close to finishing anyone except Shamar Bailey, who's no longer in the UFC. Nonetheless, it's not like Castillo has been facing only strikers with no wrestling ability, as he's managed to implement his top game against strong grapplers like John Cholish and Joe Stevenson.
TUF Season 12 runner-up, Michael Johnson, has also strung together back-to-back wins his last outings and against solid competition as well. He followed up a ominant performance against standout wrestler, Shane Roller, with a surprising upset against the highly-touted Tony Ferguson last month. Although he struggled to find his groove after dropping the TUF crown in a hotly-contested bout against Jonathan Brookins, his more recent success could possibly be a result of Johnson's move to the Blackzillians camp at Imperial Athletics in Florida, where he trains alongside Rashad Evans, Antonio Silva, Melvin Guillard, and Matt Mitrione, among others.
Here's how the card for UFC 151 on September 1st, is currently shaping up:
-Jon Jones vs. Dan Henderson (UFC light heavyweight championship)
-Dennis Siver vs. Eddie Yagin
-Takeya Mizugaki vs. Jeff Hougland
-Danny Castillo vs. Michael Johnson
